Packing your hospital bag is one of the most exciting milestones of late pregnancy — a sign that the big day is almost here. Having everything ready a few weeks before your due date means one less thing to think about when labour begins.
This checklist covers the essentials for you, your birth partner and your new arrival, including the gentle, fragrance-free products we recommend for those first delicate days.
Essentials for you
Pack comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, a dressing gown, slippers and plenty of underwear. Bring your own toiletries — a mild, fragrance-free body wash is kinder to skin that is already working hard. Don't forget snacks, a water bottle, phone charger and any paperwork your midwife has asked you to bring.
Essentials for baby
Bodysuits, sleepsuits, a hat, a soft blanket and a going-home outfit are the basics. Choose clothes washed in a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free laundry liquid so the very first fabrics against your baby's skin are as gentle as possible.
Add a pack of newborn nappies, cotton wool or sensitive wipes, and a muslin or two — they are endlessly useful in those early hours.
For your birth partner
Labour can be long, so a change of clothes, snacks, a refillable water bottle and some change for parking or vending machines all make a difference. A small comfort from home can help everyone feel a little more relaxed.
